Chalice Circles

Small Group Reflection

Join one of our new spiritual/personal reflection and sharing groups with the purpose of deepening your spiritual life and helping you get to know a small group of people in a meaningful way. 8-10 people will meet regularly with Katie Hymans, who will guide the group in explorations of the monthly worship service themes. Spiritual practice will also be part of the Chalice Circle experience.

Meets on the 1st & 3rd Fridays of the month, 10:00-11:30am (Feb 3, 17, Mar 3, 17, Apr 7, 21, May 5, 19)

 

Adult Religious Education with Rev. Tim Kutzmark

Exploring Your Unitarian Universalist Spirituality

Join Rev. Tim for this workshop that offers you the space and time to explore your spiritual life from a Unitarian Universalist perspective. You will be invited to claim an inclusive definition of spirituality and recognize the spiritual aspects of your own life. Come deepen your connection to self, others, and how you make meaning. The workshop is designed to be welcoming to many spiritual and theological perspectives. Class meets for six sessions. Choose one of the time slots below to register.

Aging with Dignity: Getting the Care You Want When You Need it the Most

A Workshop for Elders, Caregivers, and Adults with Aging Parents

Join Rev. Tim for this practical one-session workshop that will help you think about pre-planning for aging, including the possibility of serious illness. Learn how to help others (or yourself) express wishes in areas that matter most — the personal and spiritual in addition to the medical and legal. You’ll leave with a blueprint for describing what good care means for you and your loved ones, including end of life issues. We’ll be using ‘The Five Wishes’, a popular planning tool. NOTE: $5 materials fee will be collected during workshop.

Parenting and Families

Explorations in Parenting

Gather with other parents (6-8 families) as we share our questions, wisdom, successes, and struggles with a variety of parenting and family issues. Each session, we will start with a reading or short video and personal reflection, then share with one another to deepen our understanding of ourselves and our parenting. Topics may include: money, god, empathy, sibling rivalry, control, understanding your child’s temperament, and/or topics as requested by the group. Return participants welcome!

Racial & Environmental Justice

Hot, Flat, and Crowded Book Discussion

Join a book discussion of ‘Hot, Flat, and Crowded’, by Thomas Friedman. Read how global warming, rapidly growing populations, and the expansion of the global middle class are leading to a convergence of hot, flat, and crowded. Friedman argues that the solution to the environmental threat and the best way for America to renew its purpose are linked: take the lead in a worldwide effort to replace wasteful, inefficient energy practices with a strategy for clean energy, energy efficiency, and conservation.

Being White in the Black Lives Matter Movement

Through readings, writings, and interactive activities, learn what it means to be a white person showing up for racial justice in the Black Lives Matter movement. Explore various aspects of white privilege and whiteness. Learn about how to take action in a conscious way, reflecting on your own role within the movement.

One-Day Workshops
 

Vision for a New Year Spiritual Retreat

Join Katie Hymans for a day of reflection and visioning for your new year. Of what would you like to let go? What do want to call in? Take a day to reflect on your personal and community values and how you do and can be living into them. We’ll do some writing, visualization exercises, sharing with each other, simple movement and singing, and create vision boards. Please bring a bag lunch, as well as magazines that can be cut up.

Alternatives to Violence — Transforming Conflict

AVP is a program working to reduce violence by learning about relationships, communication, and conflict resolution through workshops in prisons, jails, and in the community. Join us for a mini version of what we do. Then sign up for a full weekend with members from the community at large, March 11-12!

Pastoral Care and the Actively Dying

Facing death for ourselves or for a loved one can be both a sacred and mysterious journey. Understanding both emotional and physiologic changes can help us prepare to make death a precious memory for family and a peaceful event for our loved one. We will review pre-active dying, active dying from a symptom perspective, and a supportive, understanding view.

Improve Your Move!

Back by popular demand for our seniors, this class will address improving strength, flexibility, and balance, as well as learning about fall prevention and aging well. Learn the OTAGO home exercise program for fall prevention, an evidence-based program shown to reduce falls and improve quality of life. Return students welcome!

Multigenerational

All Ages Hike

Pack your hiking shoes and a lunch and meet up after the service to head to Millerton Lake to hike the Blue Oak Trail. At a six-mile in-and-out hike, you can turn around whenever you’d like, but know that the terrain is flat and easy. Get to know your fellow UUs while having fun with people of all ages. Bring money for the park entrance fee. Further details sent when registered.

Sarayu Yoga          

Certified instruction in the techniques and spiritual practice of Sarayu Yoga. Designed for all ability levels. Includes brief meditation, breath work, energization exercises and hatha yoga asanas. Donations accepted toward UUCF Building Fund. Childcare available on Thursdays, when requested.

Fresno UU Buddhist Fellowship

The Dharma Without Dogma Sangha is an inclusive meditation and study group in which the participants feel an affinity with UU principles and Buddhism. All Buddhist practices are welcome, as well as all interested individuals. Democratic decision-making is followed in this peer-led group in order to create a safe and accepting environment.

Town Hall Events

 

Join us at a UUCF Town Hall every 3rd Sunday of the month, exploring a variety of relevant topics. Come learn about areas of interest from the environment to racial and social justice to local politics from invited speakers and other multimedia means. No registration necessary, unless you would like childcare. A light lunch will be provided for a small fee.
