Music At The Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno
Our Sunday music program thrives under the leadership of our Music Director, Lorenzo Bassman. On Sundays we enjoy an eclectic mix of musical genres, including the European tradition and other classical traditions from around the world. Lorenzo is always on the lookout for vocal and instrumental talent within our ranks.
The UUCF Choir sings once a month, on varying Sundays. Rehearsals are held an hour-and-a-half before that service, with music and MIDI files emailed to choir members during the weeks before, so belonging to the choir is an easy commitment. Just talk to Lorenzo if you are interested.
Piano accompaniment is provided by a rotation of pianists. If you have talent and interest, let Lorenzo know.
A variety of gifted musicians from our membership and youth perform as instrumental soloists and in ensembles.
Stolen Thunder, the UUCF house band, is a flexible group of versatile vocalists and instrumentalists who perform a wide range of musical styles, including, folk, rock, pop, blues, jazz, bluegrass, country and western, klezmer, reggae, R&B, and gospel. The band performs once or twice a month and frequently backs up the choir.
From time to time we host visiting musicians. The Fresno Gay Men's Chorus are regular guests.
The congregation sings from two Unitarian Universalist hymnals: Singing the Living Tradition , which includes a mix of familiar and not so familiar, traditional and contemporary hymns from a broad range of faith traditions, many of which have been adapted to reflect our UU principles; and Singing the Journey , a recent publication whose contents reflect our theological diversity and our respect for a variety of cultural expression.
The living tradition that Unitarian Universalists share draws from many sources, including the words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love. The tradition that the Music Program of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fresno shares is enriched by the music and lyrics of prophetic women and men who over centuries have spoken out for peace, justice, love, and freedom.
