... and service is its prayer.
We live out our covenant of love by working for social justice. Over twenty U.U.C.F. congregants are active members of our SJ Committee, and most of the members of our church participate in Social Justice projects through donations of their time and money. Among the ongoing activities of the Social Justice Committee are:
Monthly Social Justice Collections
On the second Sunday of every month, the UU Church of Fresno supports a local organization that is making the world a better place. Over the past 5 years, we have donated almost $100,000 to these groups. Steve Sacks johnsonsacks@comcast.net
Monthly Hot Meals at the Hotel Californian
On the third Monday of the month, members of the church prepare and serve a meal for the residents of the hotel who have no cooking facilities. Yvonne Wilkins 222-4522
All Church Social Justice Project
The church has been supporting M'ella House. This is a Westcare facility for women with young children who are victims of domestic violence and/or substance abuse problems. We provide monthly birthday parties, Christmas presents and other services to these women and children. Karen Goodman kalgood@earthlink.net
Sunday Food Offering
On the third Sunday of each month, our committee coordinates a food collection for two groups. a) The Children's Hospital food collection is for parents who have to stay with their sick children and live outside of Fresno and typically have little money for food. b) We also contribute to Wesley Methodist Church which has a weekly food distribution for their neighbors in need. Steve Sacks johnsonsacks @comcast.net
Earth Day Celebration
Our committee in conjunction with our Green Sanctuary Committee coordinates Earth Day activities at our church for the metropolitan Fresno area encouraging respect for our environment. Connie Young cyoungrn@sbcglobal.net
Prison Ministry
Our committee supports the inherent worth and dignity of prisoners in Avenal and Chowchilla prisons through various activities such as counseling and an annual goodie bag collection of personal items serving over 3,000 women prisoners annually. Maria Telesco maria.telesco@sbcglobal.net.
